Planning a trip to Tibet is tricky because there are times when the weather turns harsh, making you impossible to reach many areas. Hence, to enjoy most of Tibet, do not forget to take its weather and climate into consideration.
Tibet’s weather in different seasons
Spring- During this season, the temperature rises and the ice melts, allowing you to travel to remote regions. Tourism starts in early April, so you need to book your vacation beforehand.
Summer- This is the busiest tourist season in Tibet as the weather is relatively warmer. It also has a higher percentage of oxygen than other seasons. A light shower is expected at night or in the afternoon from mid of July till August. However, it is difficult to get trains to Lhasa in the summer months. In summer, you gain access to the remoter locations and go to high altitude places. It is also a great time to go hiking. During these months, Tibetans have market fairs, festivals, contests and more. Notable festivals include Shoton Festival, Nagqu Horse Racing Festival and Ganden Thangka Festival.
Autumn- The season of fall also notices a good tourist crowd. The weather is cool and clear, making it ideal to take up trekking and hiking in Tibet. You can have better visibility of mountain peaks due to clear skies.
Winter- The end of February and the whole of March are the training months for the employees of the Tibet tourism company. Therefore tourist permits are not issued during this period. Due to heavy snowfall, many roads are closed, giving you little or no access to different locations. You can stay at lower altitude regions like Lhasa. Many hotels offer discounts as crowds are fewer than other months.
