Mt Kailash and Lake Manasarovar

One of the main reasons for people to visit Tibet is because of the attraction that lies in the west of Ngari Prefecture – Mt Kailash. Considered as the holiest mountain in the world, thousands of pilgrims each year come here to do away with their worldly sins. You will get a mystical feeling as soon as you see the peak of the giant pyramid pointing towards the sky through the mists! Both Mt Kailash and Lake Manasarovar are thought to be sacred by Buddhists, Jains and Hindus alike. Many people believe that bathing in the sparkling blue water of the lake or drinking it would wash away their wrongdoings. On your trip to Tibet, plan this tour that goes up to the foothill of the holy mountain, crossing the auspicious lake on the way.

The Trekking Route of Kailash and Manasarovar

Though you can go for a trek up to the lake, it is advisable to cover the entire stretch till Mt Kailash. You can take the outer or the inner kora routes of Mt Kailash and the outer kora route for Manasarovar. The walk around the lake is not exhausting at all and covers visits to the five famous monasteries that are situated around the lake. Although you have the option to drive around, it is the best to walk and enjoy the view engulfing the routes to Mt Kailash and Lake Manasarovar.
The inner kora route to Kailash is harder than the outer one. Most of the tourists take the outer one for the beautiful scenery that it provides. If you are not hardcore religious by nature and are in Tibet to explore the beauty instead of being on a pilgrimage, go for the outer route which will give you a clear view of the mountain from all sides. Starting from Darchen and going till the Dzultripuk Monastery, the entire path of the outer kora is decorated with colorful prayer flags. Do not take this tour during the rainy season; the summer months will make you fall in love with the beauty of the nature sprawled on either side of the roads.
