Trains to Tibet

Each year, more than ten billion people visit Tibet. The Qinghai-Tibet Railway started operating since 1st July 2006, and the exquisite scenic beauty that is stretched along the path takes away the breath of the travelers. The Tibet Train is considered as the world’s highest railway since the railways’ Tanggula Pass is situated about five thousand meters above the sea level. Presently, there are trains to Tibet from Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Xining and Chongqing. This Qinghai-Tibet Railway is an object of attraction for both domestic and international tourists and tickets are easily available from all the stations.

Beijing to Tibet

A customized air-conditioned train runs to Lhasa from Beijing taking a time of about forty-four hours. It leaves from Beijing West Railway Station at 20:09 and reaches Lhasa Railway Station on the third day at 16:00. Presently, the cost is around RMB1300 for a first-class sleeper berth and around RMB800 for a second-class sleeper berth.

Shanghai to Tibet

This train covers a distance of approximately four thousand kilometres and takes around forty-seven hours. It departs from Shanghai Train Station at 19:52 and arrives at Lhasa Railway Station on the third day at 19:15. The train has to cover around one thousand and one hundred kilometres over the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.

Chengdu to Tibet

Chengdu does not have a train every day. The air-conditioned train leaves at 20:59 from Chengdu Train Station on every alternate day and reaches Lhasa at 16:50 on the third day. Taking around forty-four hours to reach, the cost of traveling by this train is around RMB700 for a second-class sleeper berth and around RMB1100 for a first-class sleeper berth.

Guangzhou to Tibet

The Guangzhou Train Station has a tailor-made train leaving for Tibet on every alternate day which departs at 12:19. It reaches Lhasa Railway Station after running for fifty-four hours and covering almost four thousand and nine hundred kilometres. A second-class sleeper berth costs around RMB900 and a first-class sleeper berth around RMB1500.
