Plan for trekking in Tibet:
If you are planning to do trekking in Tibet then you must buy a guidebook to Tibet which you can purchase from Nepal or any other country. This guidebook is not available in Tibet or China. If you are in Tibet and you do not have book then, you can take these book from any local trekking agency and photocopy important pages from it. These books feature maps, lakes, monasteries, villages of Tibet and a specific chapter on trekking. In fact there are many websites which provide information about trekking in Tibet.

Equipment you need while trekking:

You will need a sleeping bag, stove, and a tent to stay warm and well fed in Tibet. You can purchase or rent these items from Lhasa. White gas for western liquid stoves is not available in Tibet but you can find pressurized fuel canisters everywhere. Do not forget to take sufficient water with you.

Apart from these, warm clothes and waterproof boots are essential to protect yourself from snow covered mountains.

Food:
Even if you have planned to stay with localities, you should bring enough food for the entire trip. Though dehydrated backpacker meals are not available in Tibet, but you can find many non-perishable foods at the local supermarkets which you can buy for trekking. You can also carry chips, hot chocolate, dry fruits and instant noodles with you. Avoid rice as it will consume a lot of fuel.

Best time to go:

All seasons are perfect for trekking in Tibet except extreme snowy seasons. Generally, the most suitable time for trekking is from April to October as these months do not experience much snowfall or rain. During snowfall, not only the mountains but also the highways are out-of the-way.
