The route connecting Lhasa and Kathmandu is quite a famous overland road. Are you planning to take a road trip from Lhasa to Kathmandu? Here is a detailed itinerary of the tour.
Day 1: Your journey will start from the capital city of Tibet, Lhasa. Once you land in Lhasa, you need to take proper rest in order to acclimatize. It sits at 12,000 feet, having less oxygen than Xining, Beijing and Chengdu. Do not take any physical activity right after you land.
Day 2 & 3: Lhasa is a religious as well as fun place. It has the most popular monasteries and temples in Tibet. Spend at least two days in Lhasa so that you get plenty of time to cover the major places of interest.
Day 4: Hit the road and drive along the Kyi Chu River. The first sight during your drive will be Yamdrok Lake. Do not forget to see the Nonjin Kangtsang peak, located just beyond the lake. If you continuously drive towards the east, you will reach the Karo La Pass from where you can revel in the sights of glaciers. Descend to one of the most fascinating Tibetan towns, Gyantse, and explore some of the popular places of interest. You will also get some great places to eat. In the next 2 hours, you will reach Shigatse. Do not forget to tour around Tashilhunpo Monastery and the Walking Street. As it is the second largest city in Tibet, you will get good hotels to stay in.
Day 5: Take a route towards the Nepal border. It will be fun if you stop at the farming villages or you can straight drive to Sakya Monastery. Reach Babar town and you can stay here overnight. The hotels are clean and offer modern facilities.
Day 6 & 7: From Babar, you will come to Old Tingri, which is a small town. Your next destination will be Kyirong town, located nearby Nepal border. While driving through this way, you will relish the sight of Shisha Pangma.
Day 8: You enter Nepal on the 8th day. Do not avail this journey at night because the roads are dangerous.
