How to travel?

Foreign tourists need to arrange Tibet Tourism Bureau permit (TTB) in order to tour to this region. Travelers from Hong Kong and mainland China, who want to come here need border permit to go to Mt. Kailash, Mt.Everest and the border region of Tibet. Without a TTB permit, you will not be allowed to take a train or board a flight to Tibet. Furthermore, Singapore, Japan, Mongolia, Ecuador and Mauritius visitors are required to have a Chinese visa besides a TTB permit if they prefer to travel to China and Tibet for more than 15 Days.

When to travel?

You can visit Tibet at any time of the year, but it is best if you plan your vacation during the summer and spring months. This is when you can gain access to most of the regions with the weather being mild. During these months, you can witness festivals like, Nagqu horse racing, Shoton and Saga Dawa.
If you are the kind of tourist, who prefers to avoid the tourist season, winter is the best time to visit Tibet. During this time, there are more pilgrims than tourists, and the monasteries are not at all crowded. Naturally, this is the right time to take a sneak peek into the lives of the Tibetans.

How to reach?

Flights to Tibet are quite expensive. You have to take flights via other cities Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chendu, Kunming, Beijing, Xian and Shangrila such as Kathmandu in order to reach Lhasa. Apart from flights, you can opt for Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the highest train travel in the world. The train starts in Beijing and takes up to forty hours to reach Lhasa.

How to get around?

Travelers are allowed to commute in public transport while in Lhasa. You are free to explore the old town, Lhasa market, squares, temples and more. While visiting places of interest, you will be escorted by a tour guide. Taxis are a convenient mode of transport in the city, and it costs about 10 -30 Yuan only. They will charge you 10 Yuan for every 3 kilometers.

What to eat?

Typical dishes like, rice with fried vegetables, yak momo, Tibetan noodles are available in most tea houses. Cashew chicken, yak and pork meat are the popular Chinese dishes which you can give a try. Indian thalis are available only in Lhasa.
