Every year many visitors travel to Tibet and visit some of the remotest locations. During your trip, one thing that you need to keep in mind is altitude sickness. This affects almost everyone while traveling to a high altitude region. Though it is nothing to fear, you should prepare a trip free of altitude sickness.
How to fix your trip by considering the altitude problem?
The majority of people adjust if they are given time to acclimatize. Your body has the capability to adapt the change in altitude between EBC (5000m) to Mt Kailash trekking (5500m). Any trekking above this altitude requires special training.
As you travel higher, the air pressure reduces, which means the air gets thinner. The air you inhale will carry less amount of oxygen, which will be not enough to make your body function properly. When your body receives less oxygen, you start breathing faster. It takes time for your body to adapt to these changes. Hence, acclimatization is important when you organize your vacation in Tibet. Normally, you should not ascend not more than 1200 feet every day.
It is vital that you spend at least 2 days in Lhasa, allowing your body to adjust correctly so that you can travel to higher regions like, Shigatse, Tingri, Namtso and EBC. Always make sure that you travel with a group so that your guide can help you with this.
When traveling above 3000m, you should climb slowly. Make sure that you get time to rest properly and examine how your body feels. Flying or driving to high altitude will not let you suffer from high altitude sickness.
Begin your journey from 3000m and halt at a destination that has a lower altitude. For instance, before heading to Tibet, you can rest at Xining, which is 2275m. If you have arranged a trekking or hiking tour, do not exceed 400m in a single day. Also, climb down to places with lower altitude when you need to sleep. Remember to drink three to four quarts of water per day and do not consume alcohol.
