Itinerary & Daily Schedule
This journey will start by exploring the holy city of Lhasa. You will see the main Buddhist sites in the city including Jokhang Temple, Ramoche Temple, Sera Monastery and the Potala Palace. You will also be able to explore the Old Town of Lhasa and rub shoulders with some of the thousands of pilgrims who are here each day. Altogether, you will spend 3 nights in Lhasa. Next, you will make the scenic drive to Shigatse going via Yamdrok Lake, Karo La Glacier and the Gyantse Kumbum Stupa. From Shigatse, you will then drive to the North Face Base Camp of Mt. Everest where you will be rewarded with an up-close view of the world’s highest peak! From Everest, you will then return to Lhasa via Shigatse. On the morning of the 8th day, you will be transferred to the Lhasa airport or train station. This will be an amazing journey that will allow you to see many of the best places Tibet has to offer!

Arrival in Lhasa
Welcome to Lhasa! Your guide and driver will meet you at the train station or airport and transfer you to your hotel.
Jokhang Temple and the Barkhor Circuit
Lhasa, elevation 3650m, is the holiest city in Tibet and each day pilgrims from across the Tibetan Plateau arrive in the city to worship at one of the many temples found there. You will spend 3 full days exploring the city. The first day you will visit Jokhang Temple, the most famous temple in Tibet. From the rooftop you will see religious pilgrims prostrating in front to the Jowo Buddha statue inside the monastery. Afterwards, you will explore the endless maze of markets and restaurants that line the ancient Barkhor circuit. While exploring the Barkhor circuit, you will rub elbows with Tibetan pilgrims who are prostrating their way around the Tibetan Quarter.
Potala Palace and Sera Monastery
In the morning, you will visit the Potala Palace, the most recognizable structure in Tibet. Built in the year 637, the Potala Palace rises 13 stories and has more than 1000 rooms. In the afternoon, you will visit the great monastery of Sera, where monk debates take place each day. If you are interested in hiking, there is a pilgrimage circuit around the monastery that takes about an hour to complete.
Drepung Monastery, Ramoche Temple and the Tibetan Quarter
This day you will explore Drepung Monastery. Drepung was formerly the largest monastery in the world and is still one of the 3 most important monasteries in Tibet. Below Drepung is Nechung Monastery, the former home of Tibet’s state oracle. In the afternoon, we will visit Ramoche Temple as well as a small nunnery in the Tibetan Quarter.
Lhasa - Yamdrok Lake - Gyantse
You will travel from Lhasa to Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s holiest and most beautiful lakes. Yamdrok Lake sits at 4450m and is an amazing turquoise color. The 7191m Mt. Nojin Kangtsang can be seen in the distance. After visiting the lake, you will drive to the mid-sized town of Gyantse. Gyantse, elevation 3950m, is famous for its massive hilltop military fort and for the Pelkor Chode Monastery, which has the tallest Tibetan Buddhist stupa in Tibet.

Gyantse - Shigatse
In the morning, you will depart Gyantse for Shigatse, Tibet’s second largest city. Shigatse, elevation 3840m, is home to the Tashilhunpo Monastery. Along with exploring the monastery, you can also hike the ancient pilgrim circuit along with hundreds of Tibetan worshippers.

Shigatse - Sakya Monastery - Shegar (New Tingri)
This day you will depart Shigatse and drive to Sakya Monastery. Sakya Monastery, elevation 4310m, was established in the year 1268. Its fortress-like appearance is unique among monasteries in Tibet. From Sakya, you will drive to the small town of Shegar, also known as New Tingri. In Shegar, elevation 4330m, you can explore the Shegar Monastery as well as hike up to the remains of the old Shegar Dzong.

Shegar - Rongbhu Monastery - Everest Base Camp
From Shegar, you will set out for Mt. Everest Base Camp. You will cross over the Pang La pass, which rises to nearly 5200m. The pass has a sweeping view of the Himalaya Mountains. Eight kilometers before Everest Base Camp is Rongphu Monastery, the highest monastery in the world at 5000m. After visiting Rongphu, you will continue on to Mt. Everest Base Camp, which lies at 5200m.

Everest Base Camp - Old Tingri
This day you will depart the Everest region for the small town of Old Tingri, elevation 4335m. Along the way, you will pass Mt. Cho Oyu, the 6th highest mountain in the world. You will also get nice views of other lower Himalayan peaks. This route will also pass through a few small villages which you can stop at and explore.

Old Tingri - Peiku Lake - Mt. Shisha Pangma - Old Tingri
In the morning, we will take a day trip from Old Tingri to the remote Himalayan lake of Peiku. This stunning lake lies at an elevation of 4585 meters and is surrounded the snow-capped Himalaya Mountains. After spending time on the scenic shores of Peiku Lake, you will go near Mt. Shisha Pangma, the 14th highest peak in the world at 8013 meters. You will get an up-close look at this huge peak as well as numerous other peaks that rise over 6000 meters. After this, we will return to Old Tingri for the night.

Old Tingri - Shigatse
This day you will begin the journey back to Lhasa. You will arrive in Shigatse with enough time to walk the beautiful pilgrimage circuit around Tashi Lhunpo monastery and stroll along the walking street.

Option #2: going to Nepal border
Shigatse - Lhasa
You will finish the route back to Lhasa and arrive with plenty of time to wander around the Old City section a few more times before your time in Tibet comes to an end.
