Highlights
Usually every Wednesday, as well as at some special occasion like Saga Dawa, pilgrims visit Ganden Monastery early in the morning around 5-6:00 o’clock. They bring all the Sangsol equipment such as Sang (Junipers) , Tsampa (barley flour), barley, butter, milk, alcohol, prayers on paper and also prayer flags.
It takes around 1 hour to reach Ganden Monastery from Lhasa. When people first arrive to the monastery, they climb to the summit of the mountain, which is located on the opposite side of the monastery. This mountain is known as Anku Ri and it is 500 meters. above Ganden Monastery.
Once pilgrims reach the top right after sunrise, they start the process of Sangsol by offering Sang (Juniper incense). They burn it and add milk, alcohol and barley to make the smoke offering. They then throw prayer papers in air. Finally, we go to the top of the mountain and hang the five-coloured prayer flag at the top where there is a blowing wind to take the prayer flags to heaven and send our prayers and messages to the gods.
After the completion of Sangsol at the top of monastery, we then descend to Ganden Monastery to start 30 minute kora (pilgriamge circuit) around the monastery. While doing the kora, you will see breathtaking view of Kyichu river along the Lundrup valley from the top of Ganden Monastery.
After finishing the kora, you will reach Ganden Monastery’s main assembly hall where you will get a blessing from the Ganden Tripa, the shoe and hat of the 13th Dalai Lama, the old funeral stupa of Master Tsongkapa and also the giant statue of Maiteriya (Future Buddha). After finishing your visit of the monastery, you can have lunch in the Ganden Monastery restaurant, where you can find both vegetarian and non vegetarian food.
