Most part of Tibet, apart from the southeast, lies in the rain shadow region of the Himalayas. So this high altitude plateau can be classified as tundra, desert steppe or permafrost. Though the weather varies from one season to another, most of the lakes get frozen from October to March. The place will welcome you with strong sunshine, but there is oxygen deficiency due to the height of the altitude and the air is quite thin. Lhasa is the best place where you should acclimate yourself since it is at the lowermost altitude in the entire region. Owing to the altitude, one travel season varies from another to quite an extent.
Spring (April–May)
The weather starts to change at this point of time, and the melted ice paves the way on the roads for traveling. Tibet opens up for its tourists from April because of the pleasant weather change.
Summer (June–August)
This is the real time to visit Tibet and most of the tourists flock during this time. The weather remains cool without the inconvenience of ice, and the oxygen content in the air remains higher than that of other times. Though it might rain during July or August, it will not be much of an issue and you can travel without any hitch. You can even go to many remote areas in this ideal travel season since the mountain passes remain snow-free. From hiking, encampments to festivals like the Shoton Festival or the Ganden Thangka Festival, summer is the perfect time to visit Tibet.
Fall (September–October)
Second busiest time after summer, the weather does not change that much at this time. In fact, if you want to go hiking, these two months are the most suitable ones. Due to the absence of clouds, this is a good time to click good photos of the mountain peaks.
Winter (November–March)
Tibet remains closed to tourists in winter. Due to heavy snowfall, the roads remain blocked. Though you can come to Lhasa where the hotels might even give you discounts, the place remains empty as most of the tourists do not prefer to come here during winter.
