The History of Tibet
Tibetan history is known as the history of Buddhism in Tibet as this religion has played a crucial role in the development of Tibet and its cultures, and almost all native historians of Tibet were Buddhist monks.
Geography of Tibet
The geography of Tibet can be defined as the sky-scraping mountains, pure rivers and lakes lying between central, east and south Asia. Earlier, Tibet was a part of central Asia, though today it has come under modern China, the part of East Asia. Tibet is commonly known as the “the roof of the world,” as it is situated on the world’s highest and largest plateau that is Pamir mountain, averaging over 4,950 meters above the sea level with crests at 6,000 to 7,500 meters, including the Mount Everest on Nepal’s border. The Tibetan plateau covers approx. 2,500,000 km2 at about 5,000 m above sea level.
Main places in Tibet
Though there are a number of places to visit in Tibet, some of the main places are as follows-
The Potala Palace- Potala Palace, is located on the Red Hill of Lhasa, is famous for its great structures and buildings, wonderful artworks, and pious religious atmosphere. Traveler come to visit Tibet, have this palace on the top of their must-visit list.
Norbulinka Palace- this palace is surrounded by striking gardens in the western part of Lhasa. This palace used to be the summer palace of the Dalai Lama, it has also served the successive of the Dalai Lama as the traditional summer habitation from 1780s to 1959. Howver, today it is known as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Chamdo Region- this region is situated in the eastern part of Tibet, it is one of the largest cities of Tibet. Its name has a great meaning and reason, the word Chamdo means water junction and in this region the four great rivers, Sequ River, Zhaqu River, Angqu River, and Lancang River, unite.
The Jokhang Temple- this is a Buddhist temple and is situated in Barkhor Square at the heart of old Lhasa. It is the spiritual hub of Tibet and now maintained by the Gelug school.
Furthermore, the travelers need to have a valid Tibet entry permit and Alien’s travel permit provided by the Tibet tourism bureau to visit Tibet. It can easily be obtained with the help of a reputed Tibet travel and tour company.
