Itinerary & Daily Schedule

Every turn is full of surprises as we trek mountains, explore monasteries, and discover cultural highlights while we make our way to and from the edge of both the Kyichu and the Mekong Rivers. This trip is for those who want to experience fullness of the food, traditions, and culture in Tibet’s remote villages and the beauty and diversity of some of Qinghai’s biggest and most ornate monasteries, tucked away in stunning mountain scenery that has ever been seen by few, if any, western tourists.

Day 1

FLY INTO YUSHU, TRANSFER TO HOTEL

In the afternoon, we will meet you in the Yushu YUS Batang airport after baggage claim and then transfer 1 hour to our hotel in Yushu. Right on the valley of the Batang River and a significant part of the Yangtze River watershed, the city seat itself is called Gyegu (also known as Jyekundo and Jiegu in Chinese). This is the heartland of the Kham Tibetan nomads in the high grasslands of the Tibetan Plateau. Yushu will the start and finish of our tour and sits at 3,600 meters. (Please note that most flights into Yushu transfer through either Xining or Chengdu)

4:00pm- Rest in hotel and relax after a long flight.
5:30pm - Go out for an authentic Tibetan dinner in Xining and talk about the schedule for the week.
8:00pm- Settle into our hotel in Yushu for a nice rest.

Day 2

GYANAK MANI STONES, JYEKU MONASTERY

8:00am - Breakfast in hotel in Yushu
9:00am - In the morning we will transfer 20 minutes to the outskirts of Yushu town and then walk around one of the greatest Buddhist pilgrimage sites in all of Kham Tibet where 1000’s of pilgrims make a religious pilgrimage every day around millions of stones hand-engraved with sacred Buddhist prayers. The Gyanak Mani temple has the largest collection of hand carved prayer (mani) stones in Tibet. There are at least 2 billion prayer stones neatly stacked 3 meters high over a 1 square kilometer area. There is a row of 8 chortens on the far side of the temple with prayer flags covering the area.
12:30 - Authentic Tibetan lunch in Yushu
1:30pm- We will spend the afternoon in Jyeku Monastery with a great view of looking down on the population of 250,000 in Yushu town

Day 3

PRINCESS WENSHENG TEMPLE

The Temple of Princess Wencheng is a historical and cultural relic left by Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) on her way to Tibet in the year of 641 to marry the then ruler of the Tibetan Kingdom, Songtsen Gampo, in a move for political unification. This is an excellent place for a 2-3 hour hike around an entire mountain totally covered in a blanket of brightly colored prayer flags. From a distance the mountain appears to have been the home to a giant spider who has woven its all encompassing web from mountain top to mountain top.
12:30pm- Lunch near Princess Wensheng Temple

Introduction

FOOD

Our aim is to help you experience the culinary richness of Tibet. We will sample yak dumplings, fried seasoned potatoes, and fresh lamb that is pastured on the nearby grasslands. And don’t forget about Tsampa, a hearty breakfast made with barley flour, and the classic yak butter tea. We believe you haven’t experienced a culture until you have eaten like a local. Nothing feels so good as a nice hot meal after a long day of exploration!

PHYSICAL CHALLENGE

Hiking at high altitude provides a rewarding physical challenge that pushes personal and physical growth. This program will engage your passion for the outdoors in remote breathtaking scenery. The gorges and mountains in Qinghai Province are some of the most stunning (and least visited) on the Tibetan Plateau. By the end of the course participants will have developed a greater appreciation for and ability to exert themselves physically, mentally and emotionally away from the crowds of the big city. This course offers the chance for true adventure and discovery.

NOMADIC CULTURE & HISTORY

Home to hundreds of yaks and the nomads that tend them, this area is two of the three provinces that used to belong to the Tibetan kingdom. Its history still breathes in the many monasteries that dot its windswept plains and soaring red-rock mountains, making Qinghai andGansu a place that offers both astounding natural beauty and exceptional cultural windows for those willing to stray into one of China’s more remote regions

TIBETAN BUDDHISM & TRADITIONS

While our course area is known as the Gateway to Tibet, its unique culture is also influenced by its large Muslim population and proximity to Mongolia. We will be visiting secluded temples and monasteries where we will have the chance to learn about traditional paintings known as thangka and traditional means of worship and prayer. We will have the chance to meet some monks on our journey and learn about the significance of Tibetan Buddhism to the local people of Gansu and their culture.

Trip Highlights

MONASTERIES

Full of fascinating cultural artifacts such as traditional paintings known as thangkas, we’ll delve into the religious significance of Tibetan Buddhism in the local culture and watch monks engage in Buddhist-style debates. The tradition of clapping hands during debates symbolizes the bringing together of practice (the right hand) and wisdom (the left hand), to achieve deep understanding and clarity.

TIBETAN NOMADIC CULTURE + LIFESTYLE

Our program takes participants through the remote regions of Amdo Tibet into the high grasslands and monasteries that are the heartbeat of Tibetan nomadic culture. Eat a cup of tart yak yoghurt, walk under the tall golden spires of monastery halls and giant Buddhas, and trek through rugged mountains to discover how nomads have kept their ways alive for centuries in the midst of an often unforgiving high-altitude environment. With the opportunity to stay with nomads, we’ll have insight into their daily routines and learn to appreciate the richness of their culture.

TREKKING ON THE GRASSLANDS

The rugged terrain and steep altitude will provide plenty of opportunities for physical challenge. While there is always a risk of mild altitude sickness, we have built the itinerary to acclimate slowly and properly with time. With good health and a general level of fitness things should go smoothly. Every effort is made to ensure your wellbeing and safety, and as long as you stay healthy, hydrated, and get enough sleep, you should experience little discomfort due to altitude.
